Philanthropy and Social Investing

The Brief:

The Council on Foundations (COF), whose membership includes 1,600 independent, operating, family, and corporate philanthropies, found growing interest among its

members in grant making across borders. Increasingly members looked to COF for

professional education to equip members to approach international grant making with vision, compassion, and candor. Charities Aid Foundation’s Foundation School was also looking for ways to help global members from the UK, Brazil, and Russia understand effective philanthropic strategies.

The Solution:

COF looked for a trusted partner to help its board committees and staff develop tightly

structured educational programs for foundation staff and trustees. pfc worked with the Council and the Global Philanthropy Committee to develop a new curriculum and recruit

a teaching team that offered instruction, coaching, and mentoring for international grant making. Approximately 150 members from US and global funders spent two days in four US venues learning about Deliberate Leadership and dealing with complex problems. In addition, the Council invited pfc to participate in a training program in social investing for 200 funders and foundations in Beijing and Kunming in collaboration with Beijing Normal University and the University of Pennsylvania. For CAF, pfc provided training to more than 60 Russian, UK, and Brazilian CAF members in both Oxford and Moscow on Deliberate Leadership as an effective philanthropy tool.
